The government should have nothing to say about what kind of questions a pediatrician can ask their patient. Nothing.

Now, keep that in mind when the liberal oxen get gored.

I pretty well agree with all you said. I don't own a gun and probably never will. I have nothing against guns or gun ownership but the extremes, oh the extremes.

So the Rocky Raccoon/Bungalow Bill brigade is at it again? Yeah, I'm from Florida. I'm surrounded by these mental defectives. Hey, don't get me wrong. I am not anti-firearm. I own one myself, and I am familiar with its its use. I own it for self-defense because I don't trust the authorities to be able to protect my home. I accept that responsibility and reserve that right for myself.

But I make it a point to keep it for that purpose only. I do not take it out of the house except for an occasional trip to the firing range to keep my skills up, or when I go sailing into a remote location far from civilization (yes, there still be pirates...). But mostly I own one because they are everywhere and any low-life can get one. When in Rome... But the NRA crowd is different. They talk a lot about the constitution, their rights, and about the founding fathers, but basically they still just want an excuse to kill somebody, and they have exactly in mind who they want to kill.

I'm from the South, I know these people, they are obsessed with the ability to point at someone and kill from a distance. For them, killing is something you do because someone else deserves it, not because you have no choice. They are cowards, because a gun is a coward's weapon. You don't have to look into a man's eyes when you take away from him everything he will ever have. It's why I own one, but at least I'm man enough to recognize that and admit to myself. And I'm ashamed I feel that way, not proud, and I don't cover it up with patriotic bravado and testosterone. I don't fantasize about people breaking into my house so I'll have an excuse to shoot them, or dream about picking off commie paratroopers as they invade the heartland.

I know its not just Southerners, and not all Southerners are like that. Neither are all gun owners that way, and yes, the liberal objections are just as silly and poorly thought out. But at least they are no threat to me. And neither do I think that banning guns will make guns go away (after all, they would just smuggle them into the country inside bales of marijuana). This is not a legal problem, its a psychopathology.

But people like the NRA will not tolerate any denial of their right to own even the most extreme and inappropriate weapons. And they should know which ones serve no purpose but to stroke their adolescent obsessions. Concealable weapons, guns for specialized military applications, hideous munitions designed to defeat police armor and the surgeon's skills; nothing is off-limits to these yahoos. Go to the newsstand at your local stupormarket and look at the magazines there glorifying the use and mechanical perfection of sleek, shiny, guns. Most of them are not even suitable for sport, or self defense, or even military use. They are just a celebration of firepower and destruction and death, in glorious color and glossy images, attractively lighted, and seductively posed. You don't don't have to be a prude to loathe pornography, and that's what it is for these people, pure and simple.
