Actually,
I deleted the test that I played with and left the post with the descriptor as the URL.

Lemme try again, then I'll try TestUser.

Without a descriptor:

with:

as linked, no alt. Link takes you to original page. Do this by starting a hyper-link, put the web page url in the popdown, then add image tag (img), put in URL to image, add alt text (or not), then close the link using the "/link" tab. Your milage may differ, but it works here (IE8):

What happens if you only put the URL in the first box, is that you get only the first part of the image, like the first graph. (Cache etc. was just cleared.) I used the word Graphs in the 2nd one and that becomes the word to click on and the first part of the graph appears.

I did check your post (using edit--one nice thing here is that we can check the actual codes used to perform some task, hopefully without erasing someone else's post) and it has the jpg URL listed twice. The only way to get that is to post the URL in both the URL box and the description box. I tried it both ways and by listing the thing twice does it work for me. Of course, I'm having a feeling my browser is acting differently than yours. I use Firefox 4.0.1. I certainly get different Right-Click menus than you.

I tried posting the image without text and it didn't post. :-( That's in addition to having nothing to click on. I got a blank black box.

Hmm.

I don't have a problem with putting in anything I want for alternate text. Also, I was able to post just an image without any text, but then there is nothing in the subject line to click on.

Something I have discovered is that sometimes my edits don't show up unless I clear cookies out of the internet cache. This is mentioned in the WordPress codex.
