That seemed to be the last news update from the University. The DCA website there lists that update as the last modification of the website. Not sure what's going on there now. I suppose you could try contacting them directly.

I don't know how to respond. The issue, a cancer in its own right is bigger than me. As I age, as my frustration is constantly and consistently challenged, I also concede that there is nothing I can do to remedy any of this. Not to be mistaken for apathy, I recognize my impotence. I will leave this world shaking my head in disbelief on a level that seems so basic, yet apparently so very unobtainable. Perhaps that is the sign of maturity. Maybe cynicism. The two are not mutually exclusive.

University of Alberta clinical trial described in this news release.

We'll see what happens.

One of the intriguing features of this work was that it was funded largely by public donations, including philanthropic foundations and individuals. In addition, it received support by Alberta public institutions, both the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Sciences. The multidisciplinary team that performed this challenging translational research included members of the Departments of Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging and Biomedical Engineering, Oncology and Neurosurgery. Clinicians, scientists, nurses and graduate students worked together for 2 years and express their gratitude to the people of Alberta, philanthropists, the patients and their families.

More information from New Scientist here.

More from the University of Alberta here.

If there does turn out to be something to this, it may not make billions of dollars for anyone but the scientists proving it will go down in history.

I'm skeptical, though. By now, if this really worked, there should be a lot more documented anecdotal results.

By the way, when it stops costing hundreds of millions and years of studies to do what it takes to be permitted to legally sell ANY patented drug or medical device, maybe drug companies won't have to worry so much about how much money each drug makes.

Jody, DON"T ACT ON THIS REPORT. Don't self-medicate or try treating people you know with this, thinking only the evil pharma industry is putting a stop to it. I, for one, believe there is an evil pharma industry, but I still don't accept this report. If big business found a way to cure cancer with distilled water, they'd still be ready to make a profit on it by patenting it so it would cost a fortune and only MDs could prescribe it.

This is anomalist propaganda, just like those cars that run on water, or perpetual motion machines, or get rich quick stock market and real estate schemes, or how the oil sands and the Bakke formation or offshore drilling are going to solve all our energy problems.

If you actually follow all those links you may get scraps of hints that make it seem legit, but they have been deliberately chosen to make it seem that way. By the way, mitochondria are not cells. They are parts of every cell.

There is no cure for cancer because cancer is not a disease. Cancer is a collection of similar symptoms of tissue dysfunction caused by a host of different agents, some chemical, some environmental, some genetic, and some even microbially. Cancer is many diseases, not just one, so there will be many cures, not just one. And some forms will not be curable at all. You can't put an additive in your gasoline which will cure a flat tire.

As for the drug companies not spending big bucks on research for some diseases, but not others, that is absolutely true. The big profits are in maintenance meds, so you get a bigger return on investment on things like diabetes meds and blood presure medicines than you do on antibiotics. Antibiotic research is suffering because the money is going into long term chronic diseases. Antibiotics cure you or they will fail. Either way you only take them for a few days. The cholesterol meds you have to take the rest of your life.

This is not because drug company executives are evil men, or they work for evil companies. They are simply being driven by market forces which they have no control over. The investment always goes where the biggest anticipated returns are. These are not villains, it's just a system which is primarily concerned with its own prosperity and security and indifferent to human needs.
