I didn't particularly want a smartphone until my wife bought me one. In the 3 months I've had it though, it's become indispensible. It's my notepad, my calendar, my diabetes tracker (yes, there's an app for that), my stereo (totally kicks butt, I had to buy new headphones to handle the bass it pumps out), my camera (sucker's got autofocus down to about 6 inches, and a flash), my todo list, my GPS, my eBook reader, my email client, my watch, my web browser (try Dolphin mini, it's a nice little browser)...oh yeah, my phone and texting device too.

Yeah, it'd be nice to have a slightly larger screen, I wouldn't fat-finger so much text, but I'm starting to rely on the auto-comlete quite a bit. It's surprisingly useful, though you do have to keep an eye on it.

There are a lot of third-party browsing apps for the IPhone, but none (as far as I know) from the majors. No Chrome, Firefox, etc.

Browsing on a tiny screen for me is an exercise in futility.

To tell ya the truth, I haven't gone to a smartphone yet. Part of my reluctance has to do with the fact that cell phones are already obsolete, and all that's keeping them alive is some pretty brutal and underhanded business practices.

Case in point: The only reason Apple forbids the use of Flash on their devices is because you can create an Internet phone with Flash quite simply, removing the need to pay AT&T its monthly cell phone fee. Sacrificing the world's inventory of Flash media is not too high a price to protect AT&T's profits!

When I do go for a smart handheld, it'll probably be an unlocked Android device. Maybe a tablet. That format is more attractive to me than a too-small screen with way too much shoehorned into it. I'm with you about the strain on old-fart eyes.

That won't keep me from having to do a smartphone version of this UI, though. It's true that the toy browsers will resize the page, and you're right about the result being hard to read. I'll try to make it easy for the browser by removing all the extraneous stuff on the left and right, and devote most of the screen to what really counts: The posts.

Thanks for the feedback, Frank.

I am new to IPhone and not a skilled user to say the least.

I could surf the net to some extent with my previous samsung non-smart phone but it was not a good experience overall.

The IPhone uses safari as it's default web browser. I am not sure if there is anything better.

Safari works pretty good in that the web pages look like they do on a pc but tiny for an old fart with weak eyes.

Some sites are better than others and allow better zoom capability. The Safari standard only provides a slight one stage zoom. There is a magnify feature but the site must allow it.

This is about all I know since I have only had the IPhone for about a week and am only slowly starting to get it

cool, Frank!

I see you've worked out that:

Pages are a variation on posts, and if you assign a page to a taxonomy node like Community, it'll show up as a post. It can also be made to have comments and things, BTW, so in fact the distinction is entirely arbitrary.

The system of assigning posts to nodes in the taxonomy implies easy cross-posting. And you used it exactly as it should be used: To post a message on two boards on a topic that could belong on either one.

There's just one copy of the message and that replies to it show up in both places. No waste of resources, no duplication of conversation.

I know the amount of text you could post from your iPhone is limited, but when you get to a computer, I'd like to know more about your experience. It's possible to create variations on a page suitable for different devices, and I want to create one that works with the iPhone.

Keep up the experimentation, Frank. We're both learning from it.
