One thing a lot of Amazon purchases will do for you is get you a nice collection of boxes of all sizes. Zappos comes in boxes you can easily reuse. Lands End stuff comes in envelopes that are not very reusable. You do often need a computer and printer to create the shipping labels.

Zappos will generate a free return using either UPS or USPS. If you use the latter, you can just hand it to the mailman.

Returning things are a pain in the ass requiring obtaining packaging (if it didn't come with the product where you can reuse it), doing the packaging and getting it picked up. It also frequently costs to ship the return.

I'm just listing the problems that are offputting to me. If I had some daily help or every other day, that would be different but it's just me and the cats and believe me, their interest in packaging is attacking it (which is fun for me, too).

My wife can't do physical shopping either, but we've adapted to using online a lot. She buys clothes and shoes by ordering some and returning the ones that don't work.

Most online clothes outfits have very good customer service. Very long deadlines for returns, or none at all. Zappos is spectacular in this area, and they do a lot besides shoes. Free shipping both ways, for starters.

We get so much off Amazon (not just books or movies) that the annual fee for Amazon Prime free shipping (something like 80 bucks) is a bargain.

We use Drugstore.com mostly for things that are hard to find elsewhere.

They are a bunch of ass holes. My land lines are with Comcast but my cells are with them

Like Tom, I am married to them by the extended contracts created by getting new phones.

Until recently I have protected myself from them by only having flat rate programs. My latest deal exposes me somewhat but if the billing exceeds the flat rate, I can cancel.

My family plan for non-smart phones is unlimited for texting and data. When you go to a smart phone or IPhone (which I recently did)you must choose another data plan that used to be a flat $30 per month.

The 3G IPhone is now only $45 and they have a limited data plan that is only $15 per month. They say that you only use this data allowance when you are not on you home network or any wifi hotspot. Since I am the only one with a smart phone I think I can stay under the $15 limit.

I can't afford to purchase high usage plans. Period. I can no longer do physical shopping. Everything is on-line and it's more time consuming to do it that way. Plus you don't always get what you thought you ordered. I want to hold it in my hands and try it before I buy.

I would really prefer Sprint but I can't afford them. I don't have any trouble with AT&T because I never go over my minimum usage. I use my home phone for all long distance because all the calls are free through Time Warner.

Wouldn't do it any other way. We've got 5Gig monthly limit per phone. High, but not impossible to reach if one watched video all the time. However, when we're at home all our phones are configired to connect to our wireless router for data, so it doesn't count against our phone carrier's data plan.

Anybody who has a "smartphone" of any kind really needs to buy a plan that has high or unlimited data use. I figured this out after a couple of impressive bills from my kids. I can get on the web with my own old phone, but it's a chore, and hard to do accidentally.

Newer phones integrate the internet with almost everything, and I wouldn't be surprised if some people left Facebook or something running all night.

There are still phones that don't do much except make phone calls, but you have to shop for them.

I use Verizon, which also works with I-phones now, and there are plenty of other phones that work almost like the Apple one if you like that sort of thing.

As for companies, I doubt AT&T is your only choice in this day and age. I'd have a hard time shifting because I've been signing contract extensions to get cheaper phones, but that was my choice.
