That's interesting, Jody. It's not something I've noticed. I'd be willing to accept, however, that you may well be more observant than I am.

I know a number of thirtysomethings and they seem for the most part to be "settling in," largely accepting the world as they find it and striving to make things work. I'd even say the same about most twentysomethings, especially if they've passed the midpoint of that span. Younger than that, though, and I can see what you've described.

Or maybe it's a Texas thing ;-)

I am an establishment guy as long as the establishment agrees with my way of thinking. When it doesn't I usually choose to ignore the establishment, not fight with it.

Of course I probably have a point at which I would rebel, but normally I believe in rolling with the flow as much as possible.

I detest the kind of people that take up the sandwich board on every social issue, but would put down their dog to pacify a neighbor.

Yeah, I am pragmatic, but not always.

The rate of change is not constant, it also changes. In physics, the rate of change of the rate of change of the rate of change of displacement (mathematically, the third derivative) is called the "jerk".

There is one thing that never changes, though. Each generation always believes its perception of the world and themselves is the right one. Both our parents AND our children obviously have it all wrong.

Not surprising. Society is and always has been dynamic, though the rate of change increases with time.

If you look back at the behavior of people even as recently as 50 years ago it's evident that their perceptions of themselves and the world are often quite different from our own. Go back centuries, and it sometimes feels like you're looking at a different species.

For the youth of today to reject much in the world of their parents is quite natural, I think, and certainly in keeping with the established pattern. Change is the only constant, as the saying goes. (Must be a Sith saying. Absolutely.)

I have absolutely no sympathy with youth, or any of their problems.

I'd swap places with any of them in a heartbeat.

I am neither a freak or a straight. I am pragmatic, so I know what it takes.

The youngers are not buying into what *we* have defined as reality.

Songs reflect this, and they take it seriously. Youngers respect a good *fight back* song with an anti-establishment mentality before they do the President's State of the Union address.

Modern cartoons are sachharin as opposed to the three stooges...or Tom and Jerry in our times. It initiates them into a *caring world.* They do not recognize that they are the world. Somehow there is a disconnect in their wiring.

The youngers no longer wish to blend in as you say you do.
