Matt. 6:1-4.

Good for him. Real philanthropists do not brag about their good works.

The real charitable efforts don't make the newspapers much. My son volunteers at a food bank now and then. He doesn't brag on it, but sometimes I do.

Then again, maybe they're just shameless opportunists who have seized upon a legitimate cause in order legitimize their own agenda. Sort of like panhandlers collecting funds for a charity, or the Tea Party. :)

Oh, it's fairly obvious that the group is deliberately provoking a legal response, much the same way as protestors have done for years to make their points.

A reasonable solution might be working with the city and others to try and help the group open some kind of soup kitchen in an appropriate venue. They could try and get donations with this as a goal. Maybe they could work with a local church to use their property on occasion. For some years our church rotated with others to give shelter to working homeless people. I cooked up some of my famous spaghetti for them once.

In short, I agree with you that "Food Not Bombs" is probably being unnecessarily combative if their real goal is feeding the poor, but then they ARE Socialist useful idiots. :)

"The poor have to labour in the face of the majestic equality of the law, which forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."

As always, there may be more to this story than meets the eye. To begin with, the activist group calls itself "Food Not Bombs", obviously Socialist useful idiots, right? Could there possibly be a political motive lurking in the background here, either motivating the police action or helping to justify it?

More importantly, who felt the need to provoke this roundup? Could it be homeowners and property holders concerned about crowds of homeless congregating in their park, especially if it promises to become a regular occurrence?

And if it occurred in town (a city park is where our homeless tend to congregate here in Ft Lauderdale) maybe its the local business community upset because all those vagabonds are scary and bad for business.

Now that you mention it, wasn't Jesus bad for business? And didn't he get the business community's attention when he threw his temple tantrum? And then they contacted the authorities and got some law and order..

Let's not be too hasty to condemn the "statists". They usually get their marching orders from the real fountainheads of power.

Jesus *Random Sexual Expletive*

Nice coincidence that I read a certain quote today:

"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and interests."

-Patrick Henry-

Now, this isn't the Federal Government, or the constitution, but the meaning behind this phrase can, and SHOULD, be applied to any law in general.
