His campaign was in trouble, but its early and he could have recovered. I just think his team thought they saw a better deal working for Rick Perry. We'll know for sure in a few weeks, at most. I have trouble with campaign operatives. If you really like a candidate and want to work for him, that's cool, but if you are a professional and just work for a paycheck that strikes me as sort of mercenary. Or maybe lawyerly... The premise now seems to be that if you're not running like an obsessed maniac in the presidential campaign, full time, <em>a year and a half before the election</em>, then you're not "serious." You don't have enough "fire in the belly." It may very well be true that Newt doesn't have enough "fire," but I'm not sure I like where the bar for that has now been set. If this goes on, we stand a good chance of the process selecting for the wrong kind of people. This is a little scary.
