Basically, you decide on a name then reserve .com, .net, and maybe .org which covers most of what normal people deal with. Famous people make the mistake of not covering all the bases, and then some dick comes in and puts a website up with the same name and .org or something. You should see what happened with whitehouse.com and whitehouse.org. A while back the first used to be a porn site, and the second was an anti-Bush site.

Holding two versions each of my name and book title plus some addons costs me something like 90 bucks a year. As yet, I've done nothing with the sites.

Go to anywhere that sells domain space, like GoDaddy.com, and enter what you're looking for. They'll tell you if it's taken. Don't be afraid to reserve more than one version of it to protect yourself later.

How do I check to see if domain names are taken. I might want Patricia.McFarland.com or Patty-Mac.com or Eri.com or something.

Why can't I make up my mind?

Good choice. That URL is generated automatically by WordPress, which makes it guaranteed to be as unique as your username. Which matters; bit o'trivia: "URL" means Uniform Resource Locator, and it can apply to anything, not just Web pages. A URL is guaranteed to be unique in this universe, and so they're often used by programmers and in lots of online systems as an identity token.

Domain names are unique, too. "podrock.com" is taken, but "podrock.org" isn't. You ought to pick it up to give yourself an anchor on the Net.

Aha. Thanks! I'll give that a go. Now, I have to remember how to get back to where I needed to post it. Lots of tracks since then. LOL
