Thanks! The tech is largely gobbledegook to me (I hadn't even heard of WebGL until now) but it sounds like a lot of people are on top of the problems.

Still not seeing any "thuggery" in this, though. Microsoft's history wasn't half as "proprietary" as Apple's used to be.

More notes:

Here,
here
and here.

The Contextis report is highly speculative, and the issues it refers to are known. It offers no bombshells, and none of it is news to WebGL's architects.

WebGL is still a shiny new technology, and as with so many web technologies before it, things have to be ironed out. And they will be.

The battles over HTML5 and its related technologies have been bitter, and it could still get worse. The web browser's becoming a more important piece of software, and this latest evolutionary jump has bestowed browsers with a great deal of power based primarily on an open model. Microsoft, as we all know, is a champion of proprietary systems.

It's based on this report, not Microsoft's.

The FAQ on that page has instructions for disabling it on Firefox and Chrome.

A lot of the tech discussion is over my head.

Sheesh, where to start...

Well, there's no denying that MS has plenty of experience with serious design flaws. But whether their being honest about the security risks, it could take a while to determine. My guess, and that's all it is, is that there *may* be a tiny seed of truth that they're depicting as an old-growth forest. Google And Mozilla don't really have a history of major security snafus.

Gaming is a big part of MS's revenue stream, though, and they'll go to the wall to protect that investment. Smearing potential competition is the beginning, not the end. FWIW, though, they're in a thuggish industry.
