Spam Storm update, 6-19

Six posts this morning. One from 6/link very early (which I zapped not long after it was posted when the cat woke me up) and five from coder over an hour this morning.

IF you look at how they progress on a thread basis, it really looks like the bad speller starts it by commenting on a thread. This is followed, most of the time by a post on the same thread from 6/link, followed by coder, followed by 6/link, then coder again.

Looks to me like the bad speller asked a question and the other two are trying to respond.

The only time they haven't responded is to a post that is uncatagorized and therefore does not show up on any board. In this case the bad spelled tried twice on the same thread. Otherwise, TBS doesn't post more than once on any thread.

All the attacked threads are old enough to not show up on the first page, perhaps to hide their activity, not knowing we see all the new comments.

Note that the coder uses brackets on their html, is that a leftover from the DamnTikiWiki? This sort of activity began there.

I wonder, are they reading this post?

It's more likely something is coming in via a non-captcha route, but who knows? Maybe some vendor has a hundred people in Malaysia or something whose sole job is to sit all day and type captchas into computers.

WordPress is usually pretty easy to work with. Things like captcha are added through plugins. We're currently using one called "SI Captcha".

It's worrisome that they've only slowed down since I cranked up SI's difficulty level to the max. Maybe we need an ever tougher captcha?

If you can recommend another captcha, available in a WordPress plugin, I'm willing to try it out.

Another thing,
All the email addresses they provide are obviously false. Perhaps we could take a cue from other sites and require email validation as well?

While in dashboard,
go to comments. Up top, under the Comments title, you''ll see "All | Pending | Approved | Spam | Trash" Click on the Spam link and you'll see all the offending posts. You can sort the list by clicking on column headers, like "In response to".

Hmmm....

How hard is it to work WordPress? We could try creating a new captcha system.

Also, what do the spammer's posts look like exactly? Could I get text excerpts, etc?
