Spam is spurious posts from automatic post generators out there somewhere. It doesn't need to be checked for, it just sits right there in the comments display. I haven't seen any here in a while, but whether this is because the door got slammed or because someone's a lot quicker on the ball to toss it in the spam file, I don't know.
