While I have to agree that noone would want this (environmental disasters are very bad for business), I do have to agree with Eri that these companies are very lax on safety standards and buffed in the legal department.

The pollution of a national monument.... Something tells me they'll probably get away with this.

Big Book 'o' Bush, anyone?

If one side is understating, sometimes the other side is overstating. The history of the Gulf oil spill is a classic example of this.

The point I was making is that you were making it sound like Exxon wanted this to happen, or don't care that it did. Even from a raw "bottom line" standpoint, they have nothing to gain by spilling oil and a lot to lose, no matter how you measure it.

There are "bottom lines" that don't involve money. Keep this in mind.

Tom, Oil companies have a habit of understating. We know that from The Gulf Oil Spill and BP. We know companies understate because of mine disasters like the one we discussed yesterday (the 29 who died because the company didn't report safety problems (a gross understatement). These are bottom line assholes and the first thing they ask themselves and their execs when something like this happens is "how is this going to affect our profits? and how can we underplay it (or lie) so the public doesn't get too upset with us?"

No, Exxon is not "trying to destroy our environment." Exxon is trying to drill oil and move it to where it can sell it to people like us who use it in cars, homes, plastics, drugs, and many other things.

There was an accident. It will get cleaned up, just like the other ones. And some lawyers will make a lot of money off it.

BTW 1,000 barrels of oil is 42,000 gallons.
