Some myths do have a basis in reality. People may find explanations for events that they think is true and pass it on to others. Or someone was telling the right story, but it got muddled down the line (sorta like a game of Telephone). Or even worse (and more frequent), it's a combination of the two.

People had to have something to believe in, to explain things. Also, storytelling is an ancient art and storytellers need to be heard.

If you saw something you couldn't explain and were a storyteller, you would make up something out of your imagination to explain it, something that you could either live with or warn others to stay away from. and some storytellers just like to scare the shit out of their listeners.

Mythology is humanity's way of telling itself its own stories.

In Neil Gaiman's "Dream Country," Puck is watching a presentation of the play "Midsummer Night's Dream," and is fascinated:

"This is magnificent - and it is true! It never happened, yet it is still true. What magic art is this?"

Did you ever see the series "Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth?"

Western mythology's never been particularly near or dear to my heart either, but imho you're probably not actually mything much.

The world these stories came out of was harsh, unpredictable and very dangerous. Romaticism, otoh, is a modern luxury. To find that one doesn't inspire the other probably isn't too surprising.

More than anything else, what I see in mythology is an expression of fear. That too, I don't find very surprising.
