“Shoulds” will never stop social conservatives. They aren’t interested in taking No for an answer, regardless of how many Americans oppose them. After all, they’ve got Gawd on their side.

Stay on the road. I can find nutballs all through politics who “threaten” one thing or another. Which party has actually succeeded in carrying out many of their positions? Republicans ran Congress from 1994 through 2006, and for six years of that there was a (semi) conservative Republican president. What’s change since Roe v. Wade in reproductive rights? Are gays more likely to be allowed to marry now than they were ten years ago? Hell, neither of these should ever have been a Federal issue in the first place, which pretty much disarms the whole thesis.

As anyone who has read my posts knows, I support no Federal laws either for or against either abortion or gay marriage. Those who are trying to write this crap into the Constitution (on either side) are full of beans.

Does it bother anyone that when somebody makes a list of how Republicans are going to control everyone’s lives, few people can come up with more than three or four items? Look at what’s going on. Do you really think if this country’s economy collapses in the next 20 years it’s going to be because of laws on abortion or gay marriage?

TB, we’ve covered it SO many times. Which party threatens to take control of women’s reproductive rights? Which party threatens to tell gays who they can and cannot marry?

There aren’t many possible incursions into a person’s life than are more invasive or destructive.

But don’t worry…the GOP will stand brave guard to make sure you can get any kind of lightbulb you want.

I chalk it up to the Left having to construct imaginary demons to justify their own ideology and power grabs. There’s a reason I’m trying to nail you down on real right-wing incursions on our liberties. Frankly, there really aren’t any.

Some whistlestop school district in a flyover state wants to talk about evolution in schools and you’d think the Pillars of Democracy were being torn down right now. Is this the level they have to operate on?

I have to listen to everyone telling me how the Republicans are going to destroy us all and usher in the great dark age of theocracy. And yet nothing much has happened all these years, has it?

Personally I chalk that up to the ability of Americans to recognize insanity and fight back.

Well, in the context of politics I was thinking primarily of examples in the United States and the West during my lifetime.

From your article it seems to me that a key factor for social liberty is political liberty, a free nation that does not have all its power concentrated in a centralized authority.

Maybe that’s well worth pondering for everyone. We tend to recall “victories of social conservatives” as the beginning of dark times, don’t we? That’s kind of instructive.

“Beliefs” and “choices” are not the same thing.

Liberals have had considerably more success in inflicting their ideas on us than social (or even economic) conservatives have. I wish it were just the lightbulbs.
