Well, it can be AC or DC, we're open-minded here. Though DC is not on anybody's Christmas card list right now.

On the topological question of female or male, that too has little significance other than the statistical. But why would you want to dilute your own statistical advantage? You might want to consult Ms. Jody on that first.

Grounded, yes, grounding is always good. Wish I could find a way to ground those sparking assholes in DC. But I digress. The important thing is that you know what a plug-in is, and it's not an air freshener. Thus armed, you may scout out the territory at your earliest pleasure.

I tend to agree with you (on this). The captchas we use don't completely stop the spammers, but they force them to slow down by several warp factors and use human sweatshop labor to solve the puzzles. Their resulting attack bandwidth is pathetically low.

The cost is higher to use human labor, which begs the question of what possible payoff would justify paying someone even a nickel to solve a Zone captcha. Best I can come up with is that the process is on autopilot and relies on carpet-bombing instead of precision targeting to pay off. We are, in essence, collateral damage in a statistical war.

A deliberate denial-of-service attack on the Zone might be possible (not sure why anyone would do it), but it would be hard to overload it with normal spam channels. Mostly, spam is annoying, but doesn't seriously affect bandwidth.

I'll see if I can research it. At least I know what a plug-in is. Since we're a mostly male site, I'm looking for a grounded female AC plug-in, right? ;)

After all, everyone knows females are more grounded.

The only problem is that I think a site can be taken down by an influx of SPAM. Granted, probably not likely but it could happen so it might be nice to have something in place.

It takes one easy click to send something to the spam file. No problems here. I'm assuming they don't do any damage in there, but if they do, the file is easily erasable.

We talked about those plugins once. The big negative is that each post or comment is submitted to an outside service for vetting, and there seemed to be a consensus that that sort of thing made us uneasy. If we take a dim view of our own moderators messing with posts, how much dimmer some third party?

Not that I have a better answer. It seems that between the Scylla of the desire to allow easy access to the Zone, and the Charybdis of wanting to preserve our privacy and keep third party fingers out of our pie, human trash collectors are the optimal solution.

Easy for me to say, when it's been you and podrock and few others doing the collecting. Thank you for that. Perhaps the answer is to spread the burden out to everyone. Let's look at rating systems, especially those that include a "spam!" button.

I'd welcome your help if you want to research plugins. I don't think you'll fall off a cliff if you stay focused on your search, and don't go haring off on tangents. I need to evaluate and test any plugins, but it's a huge help to me to have somebody winnow the candidates down to a manageable few.

Some basic criteria if you do accept this mission, Ms. Phelps: Plugins must be compatible with WP 3.0 or later; and...I can't think of more than that one. "Criterion", then.

Good luck!
