This is a serious question: What would a moderate position be on the current situation? On spending, taxes, and a debt that exceeds our GDP and continues to skyrocket?

A frustrating aspect of this thread for me is that you and I fundamentally agree. Big cuts are required. The real difference is that I’m a moderate, which at your dinner party puts me at the same table as Castro and Chavez.

We just spent like a month in all-out war between a party that cannot stand the idea of reducing government in any way, and a party that was risking everything to cut the debt back, and you can make a statement like that?

Again, we just raised the debt limit by an amount greater than the entire debt was in 1987. Nobody has even touched entitlements, which, as of 2009, were carrying an unfunded liability of over 100 trillion dollars. But hey, we can fix it all by killing the Bush tax cuts for the rich ($80 billion a year) and getting rid of credits on oil companies and corporate jets.

What this is all about is that nothing much has really changed. As we’re driving toward the cliff, we’ve let up a little bit on the accelerator.

And now for the next year we have to listen to liberal idiots telling us that these “massive spending cuts” ($22 billion next year) are the ONLY reason the economy sucks.
