Stephen Hawking on the existence of God August 9, 2011 11:42 pm FrankC

I recently watched a Science Channel show called Curiosity. The show was hosted by Hawking, and the subject was, “Can the existence of God be proved or disproved?”. He apparently wrote a paper on the subject recently and, it caused quite a stir among the scientific community.

It was an interesting hour, as expected with Hawking. To make it shorter, he concluded that God could not exist, since time did not exist before the Big Bang, so he did not have any opportunity to plan or execute creation.

Man, did I ever want to raise my hand.

I get it, empirically, he is correct, case closed, but wait…

He may have proved that God did not create the Universe, but he did not prove that God wasn’t created by the Big Bang, along with the universe.

Better yet, and why he wouldn’t think of it is beyond me, maybe, as I have seen surmised, there are multiple universes with God creating Big Bangs at regular intervals. Of course the would counter with, “No matter how many universes there are, one of  them had to be the first so his original argument prevails.

We are left with a God created at the instant of BB. This leaves us to ponder other possible universes with and perhaps without their own God.

Finally, maybe God figured out how to do Big Bangs and set about creating more. We might be the only one, but multiple universes makes it more interesting.

Naturally, I am being facetious, but being an admirer of Hawking, I wondered how he came to his conclusion so easy. After all, he is a Doctor of Philosophy and therefore charged to be philosophical.

I remain Agnostic.
