I feel that it is a contributing factor. The Brits are unhappy with the way life is...and that is the premise I am going with [concerning these riots.] Consider this...if all you knew was entitlements...if all you knew was perceived to be in someone elses' power....and you become unhappy with the way things are....then for me, it would stand to reason that the way things are...is the reason...

Perhaps this is just a clearing of the fields...a cleansing of mediocrity, stagnancy...the bottom line is that the Brits do not feel enough is being done.

I don't know if they realize they have the ability to turn things around. They are having a huge temper tantrum, of this I do know.

Can you really believe that if Britain never had the dole, Council Housing and National Health, there wouldn't have been any riots?

But will we? Sometimes we take the wrong lesson. Or corporate entities overrule the populace. Seldom are decisions made in Washington for the good of the people and/or the country. Some of the good things they do, they do half-assed, negating any real benefit. They stop short and so cut off the chance for beneficial effects.

What the Republicans (and the Dems to some extent) have been doing is cutting out areas where large numbers of people are employed. So, when we need to grow employment and may need to infuse the workplace with jobs, instead, the government is managing to cancel thing after thing that will employ people. So our unemployment grows, people have less to spend, businesses shrink, more people get laid off, further shrinking the public buying power, further shrinking businesses and manufacturing, causing more layoffs and round and round we go, where we stop, nobody knows and God help us because the government sure as hell won't. However, they're sitting in Washington with their huge salaries and health insurance, life insurance, retirement benefits, etc., etc., all out of the public coffers while the economy rots from the inside. Oh, and executives and pharmaceutical companies, wall street gurus and a few others hoard the bread they've stolen out of the mouths of the populace.

I get your point Jody. We should be willing to try reasonable social experiments, but imo UK may have gone too far, or maybe not we will see.

Frankly, I like seeing some of these European countries approach critical mass with their experiments. We can learn from their successes and failures

The point I am trying to ineffectively make is that as we inch closer to a more socialistic existence in America...the results appear, observing England, that even THAT is not an answer.

I sorta jumped from A to D without explaining B and C steps.

It all sucks.

LOL, There it is, "You people (I love that indignant "Yooo Peeple") can't blame socialism for everything."

Britain is a Capitalist country with some socialist programs. More than we have I believe.

You are the one that wrote the tear jerker above about the poor discouraged British youths who have nothing to look forward to beyond welfare and supplied social services. Maybe those kids are pissed because the British government is having a capitalist moment.

Please spare me the long post explaining what you really meant

Maybe we need to define what wer'e talking about. Health care in the UK is socialist. The Government itself is not. So there are aspects that are socialist but the country itself is not socialist.

What Frank said except I disagree on the long haul. I have serious doubts about our future.

As to whether socialism is better, one needs to ask, "compared to what?"
