If you are interested in alternative history, you should look at Harry Turtledove’s books. He is probably the most prolific (and popular) American writer in this genre.

I have a problem with some writers. If you want to give scifi another try, read Heinlein’s Starship Troopers for a little dose of politics with your scifi. Heinlein is a prose master and his words leap off the page

I am a lazy reader. I scan the book…never fully engaging. I like alternative history theories. Sci-fi has never been a favorite, although I love sci-fi films and try to see everyone that is made. Go figure.

Each person has his/her own taste. Just because you aren’t drawn to something many consider a classic simply means that it wasn’t written in a way that appealed to you. It was heavy going. I remember scanning over sections. I’m an impatient reader, like action and will only tolerate so much exposition. I like the “show” “don’t tell” style of writing.

Wow, I struggled through the first and started the next but for some reason, I bogged down.

I hate when that happens. A prof. of mine once said regarding great writing, the fiction is not on trial, you are. I feel like I have missed out by not getting into rhythm with the Dune series and a few others.

I”ve read the first four of the Dune series, twice. The first one maybe three or four times.

Where I’ve only read 37 I’ve read several of them twice, and some of them more than that.

Omissions – I’m sure everyone will have a list but considering the general tone of the list, the first that comes to my mind is the His Dark Materials trilogy.

I know it has its critics but I really liked it.

BTW of the 3 out of the top 10 I have not read, 2 are SOFAI and Dune Chronicles that I have partially read. (Has anyone read all of the Dune series?)

But LOTR is #1 on this list and Simirillion is #46.

Fox was tickled with the list, though, and bookmarked it, too. There’s a few he’s missed.

There are more than few I missed. I came late to SF/Fantasy. Very late to Fantasy. I started reading SF when I picked up Asimov’s Caves of Steel. I was a goner. Then I read his robot series and his mystery series set on other worlds where R Daneel helped to solve murders. (Hope I’m remembering right, it’s been a lot of years…)

Lots of people better read than me, but few have read more scifi

I few I did not count because I have not read the entire series, such as, A Song of Fire and Ice. I have only read the first one.
