just bought the first season, only four episodes, but they’re about 90 minutes, making them quite a bargain for my entertainment 99 cents. Video quality isn’t so hot first season, gets progressively better based on samples of later seasons.

If you liked Lexx that much, Frank, you might consider picking it up from Amazon. I don’t think you need to be a Prime member to purchase, but you do need to use their player to unlock the encryption.

I’d have to call him a complex character, even tortured, so my calling him a “monster” may be too one-dimensional. I’m not sure where you can sample more recent episodes to give him another chance–doesn’t show up on hulu/xfinity or bbcamerica.com. But if comes around on cable, give it a try.

The reason I got into the thread long ago was because I’d seen “Miracle Day” available on Amazon, and anticipated working my way to it. Damn, checked just now and it’s gone. Their terms of service warn you that studios can revoke viewing rights, and I’ve read lots of complaints about this before. But that’s that, it’s gone now, so I can only hope you’re right, that it’ll trickle down to Amazon before too much longer.

And damn, a postscript: Got to browsing Amazon, and stumbled upon Lexx, speaking of Starz productions. Remember that freaky series? Amazon is giving away the first episode of each season. You just never know what’s going to show up on Amazon…or how long it’ll last.

A comparison is probably better, I would rate it ahead of the syfy channel Monday nighters, but a very close call with Eureka. I find it more interesting than the second half of this years Dr Who. It has been a big disappointment.

BTW, I have been commenting on the much bigger budget Starz mini-series, Torchwood – Miracle Day. It could be a bit of a wait for you, with no instant premium access. But what the hey, the way things work these days it might be available next month.

I’ve watched a few more episodes since the post, into the second season. Owen’s just been zombified, and how it happened was pure Jack. Christ, would you resurrect someone who’s just been killed, for only two minutes, just to get their password?

Yet they’re also weaving in the occasional Jack the Complex Messiah. Sometimes he does communicate the world-weariness of an immortal, usually after he executes somebody. And his dynamic with the team, aside from the sexual, has these episodes of sin and forgiveness, when Jack punishes then gathers in his wayward children.

I don’t know if I’m fascinated or repulsed. Which is, I guess, enough to keep me reluctantly returning to it, just to see where it goes next.

I don’t think I’ve gotten to the episode containing “the unclothed soft porn intimacy between two British pale, hairy, most unattractive humans”…or I’ve blotted it out of my memory. Promiscuity may be out, but “gritty reality” is in, and that sounds plenty gritty.

I keep wanting to ask The Future: “Does it get better?” Yet I don’t want spoilers, so I walk a fine line. I guess about the most I want to ask is this: Now that you’ve progressed as far as you have, would you say it’s been worth it?

Sort of. My problem with the gay sexuality is twofold.

My first objection is the way he has started hitting on nearly every guy he comes in contact with. “He has a knack for knowing who will be receptive.” Before you think double standard, I would be equally put off by any action hero that behaved that way. Anyway, I thought promiscuity was out.

FGS, we get it, he’s gay and it’s okay, now move on.

The second objection is the unclothed soft porn intimacy between two British pale, hairy, most unattractive humans. Their gender has little to do with it. Two very unattractive females would have the same effect.

In the role he demonstrates a distinct lack of sensitivity to the death of friends and lovers, as if it is an unavoidable side effect of immortality in a mortal world.

…a few more corpses. While the rest of the team might kill in self-defense, when you need a cold-blooded execution, Captain Jack’s your man.

Ya know, Frank, I think I’m starting to share your dim view of Jack Harkness. Once you get past the novelty of gay sexuality in a sci-fi show, you start to realize that Captain Jack is just not a very nice person. Bit of a sociopath, in fact. Or maybe monster is a better word.
