I had to listen to the wailing about the New Dark Ages through most of my adult life every time a Republican became president. Reagan, the first Bush, the second Bush. All were evil god botherers who would snap us into the Inquisition as soon as they were elected.

What did you think of that poll? It should be encouraging to liberals that while half the Republicans are evil troglodytes, only a third of Democrats and independents are.

The people that believe that the planet Earth was created in six Earth days TOTALLY misunderstand the writing in Genesis.
First of all, the word “Genesis” means the very beginning of the universe, not the beginning of the planet Earth. The word “heaven” = שמים shamayim = space, in scientific language. The word ‘earth” = ארץ ‘erets = protomass, or the fundamental ingredient that the density of mass/matter is composed of. This mentioned “earth” is without form and void, therefore it is not the matter/mass that we are familiar with.

Notice that in Genesis 1:5 “And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.”

In other words, after the “light” was created there was no more Night, only evening and the morning. After the first big bang there was dimming of the universe and another smaller big bang, and such repeated dimming and expanding, evening and mornings, have happened six times so far.
So the Day in Genesis does not refer to the rotation of the planet Earth, but the time between the collapse and expansion of the galaxies, or clusters of galaxies.
Six of such “days” is certainly long enough to evolve all the animals, including man.
Naturally, this means that the universe is teeming with planets that have vegetation and animals.
At least that is my understanding of the biblical days.

I don’t understand your paranoia for the Christian right…but I see that it is extremely upsetting for you ER. I am sorry for that. I wish I could say something pithy that would help, but it won’t, and I can not.

This isn’t just an endearing personal quirk, like being a Raiders fan, this is a guy who is running for President of my country. And all those little secular victories you mention, they are being queued up for rollback. You know that, it’s the price you’re going to have to pony up to get rid of Obama. I hope its worth it for your sake, because it won’t be for mine.

And what other “irrational beliefs” could you possibly be referring to? Surely not the Communist International Conspiracy? Remember Tom, we won the Cold War. Real Communists exists only in the fevered libidos of the right wing. You guys only drag them up when you need another tax cut. All you have to worry about are a few tired old lefties like me, and surely you don’t think I qualify as a genuine threat, do you?

I know its not as fundamental as light bulb freedoms are to you, but this means a lot to me.
