Something interesting has happened in the past few years. Remember the old Soviet Union, and Pravda? The average Soviet citizen read Pravda, and knew damn well that reality was no part of it. They were quiet about it, but basically ignored the news service, except insofar as they could glean things like the political standings of various figures from the stories. In one ear and out the other.

And then there was samizdat.

In recent years in this country, I’ve noticed that the old crap, including the mainstream media as the source of what you should think, wasn’t working any more. Memes pushed by the media and politicians aren’t resonating in the polls as much as they used to. People can easily route around it now. A lot of TV ratings are reflecting this, too.

I see this as a good sign no matter who’s in power.

For example, multiple GOP attacks on Obama’s call on Israel to return to its 1967 borders conveniently failed to mention that this has always been US policy.

I find it hard to believe all those GOP luminaries are unaware of this. They are deliberately lying, counting on their own constituency to be too ignorant to know any better. Someone has to monitor these McCarthyite thugs and call them to account, not only to counter the lies, but to identify the liars.

We all expect the Limbaughs and the Becks to do this sort of thing, but it is now a standard Conservative propaganda technique across the board. All’s fair when combating Liberals, eh? Or are we just trying to segue away from the Pournelle meme and hope nobody notices?
