That's great, seriously, but you aren't the one in the dock here. As a liberal Democrat, your virtue and generosity are assumed as a default. I'm the one who's accused twice a week of being willing to sell children into slavery to get a tax cut.

On taxes, people have to stop getting stuck on percentages.

Remember the Parable of the Widow's Mite? Goes like this:

<blockquote>...And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.</blockquote>

God seems to be about percentages, too, which should be a comfort to a lot of people, but I can't help but wonder if the temple fed a lot more poor people from the large contributions than they did from hers.

People who rely on a government check to keep a roof over their head should be very happy that some people pay a lot more in taxes than you or I do.

Not hardly. My wallet helps take care of it. I pay my share of taxes, a larger percentage than a lot of wealthy people which means it hurts me more. I also give to food banks, Doctors without Borders, Red Cross, United Methodist Church's outreach program that goes to disaster areas here and overseas and stays long after everyone else is gone in order to help rebuild.

I'm not sure why you think compassion for individuals or local people doesn't "touch my wallet." Where do you think the money comes from for donations, food banks, backpacks for kids, the library benefits, and the like?

Compassion for large groups seems to be a lot more easy and painless. Vote for the right guy and sleep soundly. Somebody else's wallet will take care of it.

I have to admit guilt to labeling some conservatives as morally bankrupt and some very well are. I shouldn't do what I chide you for, paint with broad brushstrokes.

I have never had any doubt of your morality or compassion on a person to person basis but I think when it comes to larger groups, your compassion disappears because it touches your wallet.

The perfect legislator would be a mix of Democrat and Republican. Keep taxes reasonable for the lower and middle classes, raise them for the upper, not egregiously, but to make up the shortfall. Keep the social programs but go after those individuals and corporations who abuse them and defraud them with a vengeance, to the point where people think twice before even putting a dot where it shouldn't be.

Actually, the point was the consistent presentation of <em>conservatives</em> on this board as people who have no morals or compassion. You do this a lot.

My sister has the same principles and is not a Republican or a conservative. Your assumption is, and this is part of what is wrong with politics today, is that if someone does not share your political views, they cannot be principled or moral or care about this country or any of the other ridiculous things Republicans throw out there as poo hoping it'll stick.

The part you're going to find very odd is that my political views come from the same principles. :)

<blockquote>"This is the man she loves whether he remembers her nor not. She remembers him."</blockquote>

Bingo.

TB, I so very admire that and your wife is a very lucky woman.

(Now, if we could only change your political views... Teehee. Sorry, couldn't resist.)

My brother-in-law has dementia and my sister will take care of him in home as long as she's able. Once she's not, she'll have to make hard decisions. If should can afford home health care, she would always choose that over putting him in an institution. It would never cross her mind to desert her husband in his time of need. The are married and take it very seriously. They just celebrated their 50th anniversary.

It's tough on her and weighs heavily but she never complains. This is the man she loves whether he remembers her nor not. She remembers him.

Frank, I can understand that there are circumstances where one may want to go on with their lives and I can respect that on an individual basis. Not everyone has to follow the same path. What I DO object to is some friggin' religioso like Robertson giving people "permission" to throw away their spouses when they have Alzheimer's. 1. that is not his business. 2. there are people out there (sad to say) who will use that as permission to leave a spouse who may only have just been diagnosed with it because they don't want to have to deal with any of it.

I could go on but suffice it to say he has stuck his nose in between people and their conscience which is a place he has no right to go. He just thinks he does.
