Things to NOT put down your disposal:
Silverware(my sister ruined half my spoons when we lived together–I finally BANNED her from putting ANY dishes in he sink).
Potato peels
Banana peels
Bones
Hair (if you wash your hair in he sink, put a strainer type plug to catch the hair–my disposer quite clogging when I quit hitting it with hair and putting potato peels down it.)
If you MUST put grease down it, don’t use hot water or it’ll coat the pipes AND DO run water and run water and run water. Best to put the grease in a bag or can and then in the trash.

Normally, they are. The original equipment in my house was not the best. The new disposal came from Sears. I have also replaced the furnace and water heater.

I’d like to put a local water heater under the kitchen sink, but there’s only one plug down there and it already powers both the dishwasher and disposal.

We’ve had ours for 13 years It was already old when we moved in the house. And it is still working fine.

I thought those things were indestructible, in spite of my bad habit of dropping silverware into it while it is running.

You just need to buy a good one. I replace the weenie job that the house came with with a nice, big one. It even eats chicken bones. You have to know what a disposal will process and what it won’t.

Grease down a drain screws things up whether you have a disposal or not.
