It was my only addiction, and it troubled me; not just because of the threat to my health, but because I saw that dependence as a character flaw, a weakness. I quit on New Year's Day, 2009. I still miss it. But I am free. I would have been willing to cut back to 5 fags a day, one on waking, one before retiring, and one after every meal. But I could not discipline myself.
