You should look up some of the stuff on my list (Amazon carries most graphic novels). Not a lot of it involves conventional superheroes.

I'm betting you'd like Journey, Concrete, Sandman, and Transmetropolitan.

Note that the better public libraries have graphic novel sections now.

Me, too. I wanted my heroes to have at least some shred of possibility. I liked all the cowboys, Sgt. Preston (and King), Charlie Chan, the radio detectives.

I found the Green Hornet, Batman, Superman, Tarzan, etc., to require too much effort to believe. If they had all those powers, why did they allow such disastrous situations to unfold?

This was a parallel process to my disenchantment with organized religion with it's identical requirement that one give at least lip service to that which is unbelievable.

If you liked EC comics, check this out.

Reading Comic Books

I have known others that read a lot but have some difficulty with comics.

I learned to read when I was 4 by pestering my mother to tell me what every new word was, probably many times for each word. In the end the combination of words and pics taught me to assimilate the word balloons and the picture with one look. I think that has helped me to read very fast.

I don't consider myself a speed reader but I read faster than most

Wood was the primary artist for the old ET comics that were outlawed in the 50's or early 60's. I was a huge fan of ET comics and Wood.

I lost track of him after that and didn't see his work again until I found some on the net a few years ago.

I assume he has died by now.

If I still had the 3 foot stack of ET comics that my parents threw in the rubbish, I would be pretty rich.

I lost interest in comics after the demise of ET. I thought the Marvel stuff was pre-teen stuff. One of my grandsons handed me a copy of the Watchmen graphic novel a while back and it convinced me that comics are a viable art form.

Nah, you're only obsessive about reactionary politics. As far as I can tell, in every other aspect, you seem to be a very normal and likable dude.

Nausicaa is a manga by Hayao Miyazaki, who does comics as well as he does movies. More people are probably familiar with the movie version, Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind.

If I were as obsessive as some people think I am (and less lazy) I would have tacked links to all those. But most are easily locatable on Google. The name and the word "comic" will get you most of the way there. Or print it out, and wander your local comic store. There is a lot of damn good writing and art in that list.
