I thought of it because of the website tracking that lost penguin (before he vanished off the screen). You can pull up tracking data on whales and other things on Google Earth, too.

I would. If I had a smart phone, that is. Just a website would be great. So far, though, the data is still closely held by the research team. (I've asked.)

If there are people living in cat territory, they might be willing to fund some of it. How many would buy the app? Just for fun even?

The collar I saw them attach to one of the cats they trapped behind our house was pretty big. Felt sorry for the feline having to wear that around the woods. Batteries, I guess, are still the biggest (literally) factor. That, and you know how difficult it is to keep a collar on a cat - of any size. I'd think a RFDI chip would work, with perimeter reading devices in stratigic locations. Still, you gotta catch 'em to tag 'em.

It all comes down to money to fund it. I think several goverment agencies are funding this study, started before the crash of aught 8, and the current wave of budget cuts.

Is there any reason we couldn't use tracking collars like this to routinely tag all the cougars? Trap and release sort of thing. They should be able to miniaturize these things pretty well - they have a gadget small enough to track things like penguins.

Then just have an app that tells everyone where the damn cougars are. "Hey, let's skip golf today. Number 43 is hanging around the water hazard."

By the way, just a few weeks back, a cougar was captured in the middle of the University of Colorado campus, right next to a dorm.

Currently, there is a cougar tracking study going on in the county. They've put GPS tracking collars on several of these critters and are watching their movements over several years. Recently the researchers released preliminary results for one of the big cats, and it had quite the range, including a visit to our neighborhood, which is just a few miles from this woman's house.

Remember, it was just a few years back when three mountain lions (two adults, one "kitten") were captured in the yard next to ours. We can always tell when they are about 'cause our otherwise feral cat decides to spend the day indoors under the bed.

They are here all the time. And no, a tall fence won't deter them, they can leap 15 feet from a standing position.

<p>News story and more pictures</p>

<a href="http://www.denverpost.com/commented/ci_19138303" rel="nofollow">here.</a>

That's a Maine Coon Cat. As Glenn Reynolds pointed out, it's probably the only time he's seen a cat bigger than he was.

If you look at the slide show, this lady has a lifelike statue of a mountain lion in her yard, which is probably what got the mountain lion curious to start with.

Note also how that tall fence didn't do squat to keep them out.
