Seven big problems for 7 billion people
Experts weigh in on predicaments caused by a burgeoning world population
Clearly there is a limit to what the Earth can feed, clothe and house, and no one seems to know what it is. Whatever it may be, no one but the Chinese are trying to reduce their impact. And the Christian portion of the world gives them a hard time over it.
It seems to me that the sexual drive is very strong, birth control is relatively expensive for many, not available on the spur of the moment, forbidden by religion. And the urge to procreate is also strong, children seen as a way to ease present and future burdens. These are primal drives which are not going to be overcome soon.
The Black Plague reduced the world’s population by about 20%, enough to stall off whatever Armageddon which will come but not solve it. AIDs was supposed to relieve the pressure, seems to be under control.
There’s the old response that only those people already here ever call for population control. That’s true, and someone live has to be responsible for future generations, to see they have a place to live which will meet their needs and a few of their wants.
I don’t think there is an answer to this problem. I don’t see any of the suggestions as being realistic. I think it will be one of those things which will have to be accommodated until everyone is absolutely miserable. As is global warming. The 1% will be able to insulate themselves as long as they can maintain enough order to protect their wealth. When that is gone, so are they.
I would love to peer into the future 100 years. I don’t know if it would be necessary to see past that.
