Hmmm, apparently it just flies off and crashes. Seems like they could get some little experimental value from it's final flight.

What happens to the sky crane assuming all goes as planned, lands and becomes another lab?

I feel the same way

Cables binding, not releasing, not unlatching, wind gusts and so on.

Makes you wonder though. If they can steer the sky crane safely to the ground, why not let the MSL ride on top instead of turning into a 2 billion dollar yo-yo.

Guess that's why we don't work at NASA.

As TB says, what could possibly go wrong? I sure hope that works, but I'd bet against it if I were a betting man. And in the interest of this and future missions I hope they pull it off.

Watching that, something as simple as the load being a bit off center would cause the thrusters on the opposite side to over-worked and run out of fuel. I know they've thought of that, and most everything else, it just seems like a fragile system to me.

If I were a betting man I'd bet, too, that half of the designers of that descent and landing system have dogs which won't come when they call them. I don't know fer sure how that relates, but it does.
