US Desert Targets

There are alot of calibration targets for the Corona satellites in Arizona.

An obvious difference is the size. The Corona targets are 60' across, not a square mile.

(I think these might not be satellite targets because they look very similar to aerial survey markers. Bigger but similar.)

Heres a little bit about the "Army Map Service" that placed them.

If this is the case, either we have things like this in our own deserts, or we don't need them. Either way, it would be interesting.

Given what you and others say, I'd guess it's been built for the Chinese to see how well their satellites and photo interpreters can detect battlefield artifacts.

They have known objects of known dimensions and albedo for them to practice upon.

Another observation

When I first saw it, I thought the large square to the west of one of the "patterns" was a digital artifact. 40.457921,93.369952

If you look closely it's an area 2600' x 2800' and it's level to with 50' feet. You can see the slopes where sections were filled. Cant tell if it was made before the chalk line pattern because photos were not available.

Another interesting feature is located at 40.491067,93.468700 This square does appear to be a target littered with bomb craters. There are also three weapons bunkers surrounding it.
Another interesting thing about this is the area is covered by tarps or fabric in the 2005 photo and the bunkers were not built yet.

NASA expert enlightens puzzled Google Earth fans.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/11/18/chinese_desert_mystery_sites_are_satellite_targets/

"The grids of white lines in China's Gobi desert that have got the world's conspiracy theorists in a lather for a week, are actually calibration targets used to help China's spy satellites, says a NASA researcher."

I doubt it too, though it seems to be perfect for that sort of thing. Imagine, if ground support aircraft could rapidly tell where the goodguys and badguys are in that environment they could be quite effective.

And if they couldn't, it could be devastating. I think, though, there would be some curves in it for that to be the case.

If a pilot and computer could dump all their ordnance in one box, the correct box, or one side of one box they could save a bunch of lives.

The phony airport is a giveaway, though. It's only purpose could be practice/teaching bombing runways. A "real" airport would be too congested.

Just thoughts.

Not even a serious guess

Some think they're for calibrating Chinese satellites. With the resolution that spy satellites are capable of these days, a target that size wouldn't be much of a challenge.

But what if the camera was somehow on the Moon?

I can't think of a good advantage. You could see the whole Earth with one camera but you'd have the Earth phases to contend with.

Too bad Larry J isn't around, I bet he could shed some light on it.

I don't think so

Scan the area for bomb craters. There appears to be a few scattered here and there but nothing indicating a pattern.

But it could be a target for 'something', as least a reference.

And yet another explanation. Targets for aircraft ground support practice, with the phony airstrip being for practice against the real thing.

More on the Chinese mystery markings

Here.

I had figured that circular arrangement of walls with airplanes and stuff at the center to be some method of testing the ability of missiles or drones to pick out a target amid a cluttered environment.
