The government has a long history of allowing access to public land at far lower prices than such access would demand on an open market or on private land. Not just grazing, but lumber, mining, and others.

Cost of leases can be pennies on the dollar in some cases.

Whether a third of our nation's land area should be owned by various governments is a separate issue.

Property treatment

Are they allowed to build on the land and more importantly do they exluded the public from using it?

And isn't the subsidy passed on to consumers?

As you know, my beef is with a certain class of environmentalists, the one's who are having a fit because they've lost some control.

Remember James Watt, (the Republican Interior Secretary, not the Scottish physicist)?

It's the same old story, the government develops and manages public lands at public expense, and private businesses come in and profit by plundering the resources and raping the land. Free Enterprise at its finest, most highly evolved state. This particular scenario is usually called "jobs vs environment".

Eventually, the "environmental lobby", "Big Labor" and other "left wing special interests" will get blamed for the smoking ruin that results. These guys have it down to a science.

BLM leases are a subsidy to large ranchers who treat the property as their own.

This group is almost universally against social programs, yet receives billions in undervalued leases.

A true example of hypocrisy.
