How come light always figures into that equation? Isn't it just another bit of protomass?

A recommendation:

Scientific American has a special collector's edition on newstands right now called "A Matter of TIme". There's a hundred and eighteen pages of discussion that I think you'd find interesting, maybe even educational. For a mere $9.99, it should keep you thinking for some time.

If you can let go of your own pet "theories", that is.

Another view point on that subject.
I have explained this view here before, but it may have been before you came aboard HZ,

This is the very condensed version. It does not seem to be very far off from your view point.

Space = volume where nothing exists, no energy or fields of any kind, but such a volume allows the potential for energy to exist.
Protomass = (that something) that gives mass its density and manifests itself in all forms of energy. (perhaps this protomass is constructed out of the “Higgs bosons.”)
Mass = protomass that moves in space. = Potential force of space over kinetic force of protomass. M=U/K
Energy = movement of mass in space. E=(U/K)C

The question still remains: How did space, mass, and energy come into existence?

In my opinion, the god particle would be what made up all others - the actual concrete bit of thingamabob that made up all material existence, with the only other state being void - the complete lack of anything, material only in name.
