Meh… you’re half right.

I’ve known you guys long enough to know that you couldn’t possibly be putting ol’ VRB down; but as TB said, “pathetic” often has different connotations today than it used to.

Your roommates are pathetic. And funny. Having to keep calling the cops is pathetic. And funny. The constant noise is pathetic. And funny.

You are not pathetic. More hapless. But not pathetic. My intention was to commend you for a terrific story, well written, marketable, about a grim situation for a guy trying to go to college.

You, however sad the situation, are non-pathetic. Yer workin’ it, VB. I’m not going to tell you how great that story is again.

And as TB says, it moves one to sympathy for you. For having such pathetic roommates.

“Pathetic” has come to have a negative meaning, but originally it meant “moves one to sympathy or pity.” Believe me, we all have a lot of sympathy. My son’s first year was eventful in similar ways, but not so bad as yours. I had a great chemistry student for my freshman roommate (we still exchange Christmas cards), and after that, I nailed down single rooms.
