I’ve just finished watching a show on one of the Christian cable channels; a full time movie production based on the Book of Revelations, the Apocalypse, as interpreted by American fundamentalist Christians. B movie acting and production values, but I’ve seen worse.
It’s all there, the Rapture, the Antichrist, the Tribulations, the upright Christian heroes, the snarky antichristian villains. I’m
from the South, I’m familiar with the story. But I’m still amazed that I share my country with these people in the 21st century.
In a few minutes I will be watching the next Republican debate, watching the chosen representatives of this tribe (or at the very least, those who claim to represent this tribe) engaging in political debate, doing their best to acquire the highest position of leadership in the land.
I am truly a stranger in a strange land. An immigrant in my own country. These people are alien to me, as alien as Tibetans or Turkmen, As Amazonians or Armenians. I have absolutely nothing in common with them, they are utterly incomprehensible to me.
This is truly the end of days. What the hell is going on here?
