Disentanglement is going to be difficult politically, the Jewish lobby has been able to take advantage of a substantial portion of the American public which has convinced itself that they will never go to heaven unless they fight on Israel's side in Armageddon. In fact, their going to heaven depends on there <em>being</em> an Armageddon. And in an election year, no matter what Obama does, or how it turns out, the Right will squeal like little piggies in self-righteous indignation and patriotic and religious outrage.

And of course, Israel's opponents in the middle east aren't exactly paragons of rational, secular thinking or democratic values. It's hard to root for them, even if god, in his infinite wisdom, gave them most of the petroleum on the planet.

Trying to steer a middle course through this minefield is hard enough without our pals in Tel Aviv metaphorically yelling out to all the patrons of their local biker bar "My friend Uncle Sam here can whip anybody in this joint."

Punny choice of a quote source, ER :D

Seriously though, I say we ditch 'em. In fact, if the US plays it's cards right, they could disentangle from the situation enough to gain some major kudos points with the middle east. Lord knows we need 'em...

The Israelis are really starting to piss me off. They are definitely playing some sort of political bluff game here, and your speculation is a valid one, but only one of many. If they were actually contemplating a military action, we wouldn't hear a peep about it until after it was all over.

The problem is all this bluster provokes unpredictable counter-reactions, unforseen consequences, and we will be involved in anything that happens, whether we like it or not.

The Israelis are dangerously close to provoking a chain of events that will drag (perhaps inadvertently) their closest ally into unforseeable situations. We have already paid a great price for our support of Israel, they have no right to manipulate us like this.

As Dash Hammett's Fat Man tells us,

<em>"That's an attitude, sir, that calls for the most delicate judgement on both sides. Because, as you know, in the heat of action... ...men are likely to forget where their best interests lie... ...and let their emotions carry them away."</em>
