Well, someone (who is curious - hint, hint) should do a study, like you do prior to starting a new business.
What do you have to spend to get started? How much does it cost to operate? What can you expect to sell? How big is that market?

Yes, but I'm wondering if there was ANY way such a company could survive by catering a little more to private interests to keep their research going, like those "institutes" you hear about. Hopefully, a balanced could be struck between monetary needs and unbiased truth.

I'm thinking that ESA, China and
a more confident and restored JAXA are a more likely source of future deep-space robotic missions.

Notice I've not mention India nor Russia.
Russia's deep-space program is worse off than NASA's; and India has tied
its deep-space efforts to Russia.

Hmmmm......

Could a company develop that exists almost solely for the purpose of scientific missions? I imagine it'd be a think tank of sorts, and in order to keep afloat, they could sell or loan off returned samples, and the like; rent out advertising; run a subscribed newsletter; etc... generally collaborating with private interests.
