The deficit in 1980 (constant dollars) was $170.9 billion. In 1988 it was $242.5 billion.

This is not a factor of 3.

The deficit now is about $1.1 trillion. This is four times $242 billion. In addition, the rate of debt growth is far more than it was even during the Bush years.

I might remind you how important this "pap" was to Democrats not that long ago.

Reagan had no war, tripled the deficit. 3X. Cheney, VP under Bush, said the lesson was that deficits don't matter.

As I said, deficits are pap for the conservative masses.

This isn't new.

The 2008 Democratic primary was no dance through the park, and others in previous years, on both sides, drew a lot of blood.

No one will believe them, Bowz. The entire campaign for the nomination has been nothing but multiple lies directed at other Republicans by Republicans. Only the True Believers will think they will suddenly start telling the truth when taliking about Democrats.

Same as 2010.

But then, liberals (and many Republicans) have wiped 2010 out of their minds.

The largest deficit during the Reagan years (all constant 2005 dollars) was $385 billion. At that time, the Federal budget was less than half what it is now.

The smallest deficit under Obama to date has been $1.12 trillion, and from Obama's current budget there is no sign that the curve is bending away from deficits in that range for the next ten years. Think this might have a little bit to do with the importance of the issue in Gallup's polls?

Interesting no liberal ever points out the economy Reagan "inherited," which is the constant excuse for Obama's deficits.

I wish I could agree, and while life is lived forward, it's understood backward. With Rove and Perry involved, combined with the lack of scruples Romney has demonstrated, I think there will be a smear of Obama of epic proportions complete with suborned witnesses.

We'll see.

That's the way politics has always been throughout history. Its basically about guys in suits (or togas, or armor, or powdered wigs) who think they should be in charge and making more money.

From their point of view, they are just seeking the freedom to excel. They want to be as good as they can be, to maximize their potential, to achieve.

It attracts a kind of personality that believes everyone else is lazy, cowardly, stupid, or unambitious, so they deserve whatever they get. They take what they can from the little man and from their community and they tolerate no interference or restraint. Consequently, they are often in conflict with others like themselves; although they also have a genius to ally themselves with their competitors to perfect their domination of those they prey on. It is safer, after all, to wage war on your victims than it is to do so with your rivals.

Its a wonder things work as well as they do. Politics isn't about ideology, or sociology, its about pathological psychology.

Does it bother anyone else that politics has basically become a slander-filled version of Survivor?

I think the Republicans have already shot every arrow in their quiver--at each other.

This election will be decided by events out of anyone's control, an unexpected economic collapse or a military flare-up overseas (one he loses or can't quickly win) will finish Obama off in a heartbeat. If the situation improves, or even remains more or less the way it is now, there's no way he can lose this election.

People have seen what the Tea Party mentality is willing to do to rise to power, and what they are capable of doing once they get it. And the long primary campaign has given the electorate a profound insight into the personalities and dynamics now dominating the GOP.
