On April, 10, 1912, one hundred years ago today, the White Star Liner
Titanic departed from the port of Southampton, England.

Planned Destination: New York City.

Are today's cruise ship company's tempting fate by sending two ships
to the exact spot at the same time
in the middle of the night in one of the worst stormy regions of the Atlantic?
 Forget radar. Forget GPS. Forger
wireless telephones and computer
navigational aids.
All that technology is fine, but all it takes is power-outage
on one ship, combined with misjudgement on the part of the crew on the other to create a double Titanic disaster. The ultimate Murphy's Law circumstance.

One hundred years ago today, April, 06, 1912, Captain Edward Smith and
hundreds of other Englishmen signed on
as the ship's crew that Easter Saturday.

Did you know that over 1/3rd of the
fatalities were residents of Southampton, England?

I've heard of the Hindenburg, the Graf Zeppelin, and the LZ ships Count Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin made to test his revolutionary idea of flight(Yes, I do have his biography on my shelf, why do you ask?).

It's the world's biggest shame that media hype from one accident ended a great age. The magnificent zeppelins get as much bad press as nuclear energy, I sear.

And 100 years ago today, the Titanic
arrived at the port of Southampton where it was berthed at its quay for close to a week.

The reason? The Easter holidays on the 5th and 7th halted crossing preparations for nearly 3 days.

Did you know that the Titanic burned nearly 400 tons of coal while berthed in Southampton to operate electric systems?

Some curious facts that I didn't know about.
The Titanic was not totally powered by piston & cylinder engines. She had Two piston & cylinder engines, plus one turbine engine.
 The ship also generated more
electric power than most power-plants
in big cities those days.

Not unlike the history of the giant airships.

Everybody knows about the Hindenberg.

How many people have heard of the Hindenburg's immediate predecessor, the Graf Zeppelin? It was also filled with hydrogen, and had nearly ten years of uneventful passenger service all around the world, with 590 flights covering over a million miles.

The best-laid plans of mice and men, etc. It had a far greater impact on the world from the bottom of the sea than it would have on top.
