You’re right, of course, and I think all those ideas were valid explanations based upon the level of knowledge at the time. That they didn’t survive better measurements and observations I don’t think makes them “bunk”, or some fraudulent scheme.

I would have believed them had I known what they knew.

There’s no shame in honest ignorance in the absence of better information.

Where you run into trouble is when you insist the Earth is flat after you’ve spend a week on a space station.
