"With all due respect" tends to mean something else sometimes.

And "My friend". I used to work with an older fellow on a construction crew. He was a very hard worker, and sneaky. A favorite with the owner, when he started calling a new guy "my friend" you knew the fellow was going to get it. Don't trust "my friend".

Politicians saying, "The people of my district will no longer tolerate", or "The people of my district insist on - - - - ". You know smoke is being blown, hard.

"Well, excuuuuse me! I'm sorry, but - - - -." No one is sorry.

Saddam Hussein coined a great one, that has managed to survive translation from Arabic to English:

"The Mother of All Battles".

I've heard "That was the Mother of all ***." Numerous times since.

The younger male generation uses *Your Mom* ALOT....in a sexual reference.

Example: "I went fishing, the other day, dude...caught a huge one."

"Your Mom caught my huge one, dude, and she is still smiling."

I have never thought of myself as creative and I seriously doubt that I have originated any memes. Maybe "cold as a nun's buns" but I probably heard it somewhere.

There are hundreds I have heard that I wish I had said.

Screw you and the horse you rode in on.
That went well, didn't it?
Meanwhile back at the oasis, the Arabs were eating their dates.
etc, etc

I may have helped popularize a few. A couple that I have been known to use that others have said were unfamiliar are,

I guaranfuckingtee it, vs the more well known guarandamntee it.

As cool as the other side of your pillow.

There was a great one that one that I thought up in the 70s but it didn't catch on and I have forgotten what it was. :)

Who has seen the latest viral meme Ridiculously Photogenic? Google it.

The whole "where's my car" line is a meme, often modified by other nouns. "Dude" never vanished completely, although it was introduced to a whole new generation in "The Great Lebowski".

My first boat was almost named "Spooky Dude", but fortunately, reason intervened in time.

There was a time there for a while when Dudes were everywhere; black dudes, white dudes, straight dudes, heavy dudes, just about any carbon life form could be a Dude, as well as any particularly interesting inanimate object and of course, we can't forget the useful and unforgettable "Lookit that DUDE!"

I guess you had to be there. Just remember, Cheech and Chong dialog is not an act, I spent most of graduate school talking like that.

I am resisting the urge to reply with "Dude". It's taking a LOT of effort.
Isn't the phrase "Dude, where's my car" a meme?

<p>"What could possibly go wrong?" is widely used. I didn't make it up.</p>

"I am not making this up" was a common bit for the humor writer David Barry, but I doubt he was the first.

"Pig through a python" is common in informal statistics. I've heard it most often used to refer to Baby Boomers moving through the entitlement system.

Verbal memes are not the same as slang, although slang (as do many components of language, even language itself) can be a meme.

For example, using the word "dude" is slang. (Except perhaps in its original meaning, a "dandy" or "fop"--an effeminately dressed man, as a guest at a western "Dude Ranch").

Contemporary use of "dude" as a spacer or place holder in a sentence, or as a generic term for a person, as in, "Dude, where's my car?" Is definitely slang.

"Dude" has been around as slang at least since I was in college. In fact, its been around so long it may actually be a part of Standard English by now. Fortunately, other slang of that era has long vanished. Nobody misses "groovy".

However, if you deliberately use it as a means of poking fun at people who talk like that, then it becomes a verbal meme as I described. Follow that?

OK, I know who Green Day is, but I never heard of The Game. What kind of dude does that make me?
