There is a difference. A featureless light flying through the air just doesn't give you enough material to work with. A real UFO, that is, a vehicle from another planet, would probably not even be recognizable as a machine to a technological primitive like myself. Just like an ancient Bayblonian would not be able to make any sense of a nuclear submarine, a helicopter or a drag racer.
