Don't like to admit this. About a month ago I had problems with my wireless, looked up D-Link customer service number and called it.

Got a woman on the phone right away who asked the appropriate questions. She asked to link into my computer, and I did. She rooted around for a while, so long in fact that I thanked her for the time. After a while she asked if I'd ever cleaned out my registry, then ran some "scan" and came up with 25,000 problems in 3 categories. Clean those up and the wireless would work.

She just happened to have a program that would clean it out for $140. Best Buy's Geek Squad would charge me $300, she says.

By now I've figured out this isn't D-Link. I terminate the session.

Looking back to the Google search, I notice that the link has another part to it, and while it's called "D-Link" it is not.

They did a damn good job, though. I will admit there was something I could have noticed, but once I called I could not distinguish this from other calls to D-Link.

I still feel foolish, though. Am foolish, I guess that's why.

<p>I think a minimum of competence is needed to qualify as a "scam."</p>

This sounds like it was on the level of "Sir, would you care to place your wallet in this magic disappearing box?"
