LOL,I hope that Tom appreciates the humor. Sometimes he tends to leave us guessing about things like this. He has made it clear that he has a thick skin when it comes to insults related to politics. I hope that extends to more personal kidding. I would never deliberately offend anyone and I would want to know if I crossed the line.

Related to this and some of our recent threads on personality and humor, I wondered if the custom of male bonding by insults is a regional thing or universal in American culture.

When I was growing up there were lines you did not cross. Anything to do with someones mother was off limits and would quickly lead to a fight if someone crossed this line.

I have noticed that this line has disappeared and Mother references are now favorites. In any case all the way to adulthood and beyond friends never miss a chance to gig each other for any and all things that are subject to good natured ridicule. We call each other any insulting name or obscenity that fits the occasion.

Having come along this way, I have a hard time resisting taking a friendly shot at any of you guys when the opportunity arises, because I like you. If I didn't I would keep my virtual mouth shut. I can assure you that I can laugh at the same kind of thing aimed at me. I have been zinged for referring to natives of Scotland as Scotch and prostate problems as prostrate problems. This didn't bother me in the least and it was funny as hell at the time, even if my face was red.

I realize in this environment caution is advised since that which is written does not include body language and facial expression. I try to take this into consideration by keeping it ultra light.

Anyway if I offend or annoy anyone consider yourself flipped off. :) and any other emoticon that indicates I am kidding.

Yeah, it was a familiar picture. To be perfectly honest, I thought it wasn't as deep as any longtime Zoner could write. We've been thinking a long time about the big questions online, of identity, and whether false identities are a good or bad thing (yes), anger management, online friendships, all that. But for someone obviously a young college student for whom this stuff is a revelation, not bad. I kinda enjoyed the sage advice at the end to future generations.
