Obama's saying that the United States has the capacity to do great things, and that he has pursued such goals his entire career, NOT that "America's" destiny is to enlighten and rule this world and others (As Romney and others like him would have it).

What ER said.
I don't think that your party affiliation defines your views entirely, however - anyone can believe that the United States has the capacity to do great good (WITHOUT meddling with the rest of the world's affairs), and they're right. I don't personally define that as American Exceptionalism, but the way I define things tends to be different than how others do.

When those people signed the pledge to not support anything Obama proposed, what do you think they were doing?

Did that sound like working together for the good of the country? Did that sound like what the Founding Fathers had in mind?

Or did it sound like Hitler's Reichstag? (Sorry for the comparison, I'm very sorry. I wish it weren't true.)

My original point: The Republicans didn't actually manage to sabotage anything,

as witness the pathetic examples of "obstruction" in the article.

That state of affairs lasted two years of solid Democratic rule, until the Republicans blew the Democrats out of the House in 2010.

As for the Republican attitude about Obama, and "deliberate sabotage" (even assuming Draper is an accurate source), I have a very hard time believing that the Democrats in the House and Senate after Bush took office in January of 2001 were all about helping Bush carry out his programs and not obstructing him any way they could.

I dare say one could collect some interesting quotes from private meetings of Democratic politicians on the night of Bush's inauguration, too.

By the way, I wasn't talking about TARP either. Keep them straight.

What does that have to do with anything I just said?

I wasn't talking about TARP, my post was about Republican Obstructionism and deliberate sabotage of the President's program, regardless of the consequences to the country or the wishes of the electorate; all in order to implement their own agenda by crippling his. And how this was planned before the President even took the oath of office.

You're really good about changing the subject to an area where you feel better prepared, aren't you? The last time this happened I was talking about the Population Explosion, and you shifted over to Global Warming. (Breathing Earth, Off-Topic, Apr 24).

You slipp'ry li'l debbil, you.

Republicans have a different definition of American Exceptionalism than Democrats do. Democrats believe America is special because of what it is and what it has done. Republicans believe Americans are special because of who they are. There is a big difference.

Democrats believe our country is good. Republicans think it can do no wrong. There is a big difference there, too.

VRB understands that, that's why he called you out on it. It's why I knew exactly what he was talking about. You never will understand it.

"Our president doesn’t have the same feelings about American exceptionalism that we do,” Romney said Saturday. “And I think over the last three or four years, some people around the world have begun to question that. On this Tuesday, we have an opportunity — you have an opportunity — to vote, and take the next step in bringing back that special nature of being American.”
