Folks are looking for cures for their egos rather than diminishing them. Some of the most disfunctional folks I’ve seen have been in Buddhist Temples.

I attended one sitting where the leader was collecting funds for his and his wife’s annual summer retreat (read “vacation”) in their wilderness cabin. I said it looked like a wonderful cabin and a nice vacation and I didn’t care if he went to the cabin or not. I added that if he did he should pay for it. He launched into an explanation as to how it would benefit the entire temple and it was customary for the group to pay for it.

I suggested that attachments such as to a wife, vacation and cabin seemed unhealthy and he moved on. I finished the sitting and didn’t go back.

But I can see where jealousies among monks with a Western background could lead to impulsive murder.
