I always felt the quickest way to spot a dictatorship was when they wouldn’t let you leave the country whenever you wanted.

Of course, I have a feeling the Chinese couldn’t wait to get rid of this guy. The real test will be be if and when they let him back in. He has humiliated the Party, first by escaping from their house arrest, then by leaving the country under such public circumstances. and if they try to punish his family, it will be a propaganda disaster for them. If they do it quietly, no one will get the example lesson. And no one in China knew who this guy was, but they do now.
