The US defense budget. May 20, 2012 9:25 pm bowser

The US military budget is 4.7% of the GDP, compared to an average of 2.6% for the Rest Of the World.

The US budget is $711 billion, compared to a world total of $1630 billion.

And yet the United States does not have any legitimate military threat, does not have endangered borders, has no interest in spreading freedom, democracy, human rights or liberty.  It’s only reason to spend that much money and spend the lives that are lost with it is to promote multi-national corporation profits.  Period.

This idea that our brave men and women are fighting to protect the American way of life is pure bullshit. The bumper stickers saying “If your child speaks English thank a serviceman” is total nonsense.  The last time the US was invaded was by an English-speaking country, and that was two centuries ago.

And yet Conservatives suggest NOT cutting the military budget but cutting social services instead.  I have a solution.

Let’s retrain the large multinationals to provide social services.  Let’s have Halliburton providing substandard meals to poor folks instead of military personnel.  Let’s have them build schools instead of barracks, let’s have them train people to be X-ray technicians, lab workers instead of foreign policemen.  Let’s have them build MRIs instead of rockets, medical centrifuges instead of Maverick.  Let them make a profit that way.

Rather than completely waste the money the way they are doing now.  The phony bastards.
