our disinterest in spending money on development of space technology.

Personally, I wish the Chinese well because their success will get us off of our ass.

I believe that private space exploitation will ultimately be the key to making us a space faring people but government development of technology will assist us in that effort. and provide a boost for our economy.

Call me crazy but I can't remember a happier and more prosperous time in this country than when we were in the Space Race with the Russians.

Couldn't find anything really specific, however there were mentions in several articles that the US wanted to prevent transfer of missile technology.

Incidentally, there is a great Wikipedia article on ownership of the ISS, who does what, and how the financial and working parts work.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47840310/ns/technology_and_science-space/#.T9yJfRdYvng
Good for them.

"China has only limited cooperation in space with other nations. Its exclusion from the ISS, largely due to objections from the United States, was one of the key spurs for it to start pursuing an independent space program 20 years ago."

Their station is 1/6th the size of the ISS.
