The first time I was told I was diabetic was nearly 25 years ago and I pretty much ignored it for about 15 years. I have it under control now by testing daily and taking glyburide, a very old sulphur based med.

The leg problems might (emphasize might) be nerve damage from the diabetes) I neglected my problem way too long and I now have some very annoying and somewhat painful leg problems that involve some twitching but numbness, tingling and some pain would be my description, in that order and before twitching. Twitching might be restless leg syndrome, which is also nerve related.

Blood sugar fluctuations also make you very irritable and hard to live with.

I take a medicine called Neurontin (Gabapentin) for the nerve problems and it is very (but not totally) effective. It comes in capsule fore and in a cream for tropical application

You should be getting a Hemoglobin A1C test every 3 months and it will somewhat reveal whether you are controlling your blood sugar or not. I forget what's normal but for diabetics <7 is considered control. You need to test (finger pricks) to really know since the A1C is an average and you could be bouncing around.

A lot of people do better than me on control. I am very undisciplined. In spite of the problems I have brought on myself my failing to address my problems, I find myself doing whatever I please far too often.

Looking back over my life I think my diabetic tendencies have been apparent since I was a young man. I had a Dr order a glucose tolerance test on me when I was about 25. I know now that a non-diabetic's blood sugar never exceeds about 160-170 if they consumed a pound of raw sugar and they don't order a GTT unless you have exceeded that number. I had the same thing happen on several occasions through the years and the various Doc's chose to tell me I needed to lose a few pounds rather than tell me, "you are a type II diabetic and you need to start testing and living like a diabetic". It was like they didn't want to break the news to me.

When a Dr finally told me that I was a diabetic nearly 25 years ago, I happened to be in the process of moving to another city so I ignored the problem for another 5-6 years. By that time I was symptomatic and was forced to start medicating. It was another 10 or so years and more symptoms before I learned to blood test and control it better.

As it is I have lived way longer than I expected and I am still enjoying life. Perhaps not as much as I might have with better behavior and better sense but it could be much worse.

Now that you have read this, you can go ahead and tell your Doctors instead of waiting for them to tell you. :)

Depends I think...but either way give me a DR. that 'splains. My Gyn. is awesome and a male. He explains everything and in explaining, allays my fears.

What is interesting to note is I thanked him for being that way. He told me his older Hispanic ladies were just the opposite. They didn't want any explanation...didn't want to know...just wanted things fixed.

I am convinced my Gyn. is gay though...so...in a way he is sorta one of the girls.
